Safe Ways to School

Chair: John Gallagher                                       John.Gallagher@wfrpc.org

This project focuses on the state mandated “Safe Walkways” project to assure that kids get to school safely. Key issues:

  • How to work with neighborhoods to identify safe paths to schools.
  • How to find support for local "Safe Routes to Schools" projects.

Recent News

Two local schools, Spencer Bibbs and Lincoln Park, took part in International Walk to School Day. HST chair Robin Herr and team members were joined by Mayor Wiggins, County Commissioner Marie Young, City Council members Sam Hall, Maren DeWeese, Megan Pratt, Diane Mack, and Fire Chief Beaty. With the support of the Florida Department of Transportation and the Community Traffic Safety Team, the 370 student participants received Safe Routes to Schools backpacks and blinking lights.

Due to the attention brought to the hazardous pedestrian conditions facing the students, a four-way stop is being placed at the intersection of Avery and Sixth.
