History

BRIEF HISTORY OF UNITE ESCAMBIA

Unite Escambia was formed in August 2006 under its original name, Escambia Community Collaborative. It began as a partnership between United Way of Escambia County, the Escambia County Health Department and Partnership for a Healthy Community.

The initial goal of the partnership was to conduct a comprehensive community assessment that would help define the vision for a strong, healthy Escambia County.

First, data was assembled from the following sources:

  • Research reports from multiple reliable local sources
  • A community survey (more than 700 paper, phone and web surveys)
  • Six separate focus groups of community residents

Next, a Leadership Team of 41 community advocates assembled. The Leadership Team spent several months reviewing the community data. Then the team identified a Community Vision:  "A healthy community where all have the Inspiration and opportunity to succeed". Critical community priorities were chosen, and efforts to make a positive impact on these issues began.

In May 2007, five Solutions Teams were formed for each of the priorities: Education, Environment, Health, Housing, and Poverty. Each Team set measurable goals and established indicators for achieving those goals that have the greatest probability to achieve the Community Vision. All five teams are still active and seeking additional partners to work in pursuit of the team goals and Community Vision.
