Project: Community Compost

Description: Start a community compost to support two community gardens.

Goals:

  • Reduce amount of trash in landfills
  • Provide compost and fertilizer for community gardens
  • Advocate recycling

Overview:

Many people fail to realize that more than 80% of what we throw away can be reused and recycled. Many recyclables are not plastic, aluminum, or metal; most of what we can reuse comes from the land itself. Instead of throwing away fruit and vegetable scraps, tossing tree branches and leaves, and trashing dead house plants, we can use that ‘trash’ to make our community gardens flourish.

With a $1,000 Inspiration for Escambia grant, I would like to start a community compost. There would be two large compost bins that would be located next to two community gardens that support the Manna food pantries. The compost needs minimal attention; the 20 active volunteers at the gardens can turn the compost and add water, if needed. The compost would then be used in the community gardens. I also will purchase “compost buckets”  to distribute at community events. Residents can store their compostable materials in the buckets and then bring them to the compost center.

Measures of Success:

  • Pounds of compost
  • Number of participants

Breakdown of Funds:

$400- 2 160-gallon compost bins

$30- 2 shovels

$40- Hose

$20- Spray Head for hose

$510- 160 compost buckets for the community (gallon gallon buckets with lids at $3 each)
